Actos and bladder cancer – the risks

drug research

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently released a safety warning concerning the use of the diabetes medication Actos® (pioglitazone). According to data from a five-year analysis of an ongoing, ten-year epidemiological study, the FDA found that prolonged use of Actos may increase the risk for bladder cancer by up to 40 percent.

A similar study was conducted in France, which led the country to suspend use of pioglitazone and influenced Germany to recommend that pioglitazone not be prescribed to new patients.

Medication Gets New Label

In response to the findings, the FDA insisted that the Warning and Precautions label for pioglitazone-containing medications be revised to include the increased risk of bladder cancer. Despite these warnings, Actos and other medications containing pioglitazone are still being prescribed by health care professionals and taken by diabetes patients.

Recommendations to Patients

Although the FDA continues to evaluate the data for more conclusive results, it recommends those patients who have either taken Actos or have been prescribed a medication containing pioglitazone to:

  • Not take pioglitazone if you are receiving treatment for bladder cancer or have a history of bladder cancer.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you exhibit any symptoms commonly associated with bladder cancer, such as painful or frequent urination, back or lower abdomen pain, and/or blood in your urine.
  • Read the revised Medication Guide that accompanies pioglitazone medication, as it details all potential risks and side effects.
  • Report any experienced side effects from the use of pioglitazone medications to the FDA MedWatch program.
